2022 Michelin Guide: new stars atop the Alps

This year, yet again, Alpine resorts are availing themselves of new stars! Discover the art of living, as experienced in the mountains, and the flavours of our regions in the 2022 Michelin Guide.

Focus on gastronomy: new Michelin-starred restaurants

Well-known stamping ground of both skiers and discerning gourmands, the Alpine summits deploy feats of imagination to earn themselves Michelin stars. Novel flavours, locally sourced produce. Shall we rustle up the year 2022’s best locations in the Alps?

Our mountain enthusiasts introduce you to the most beautiful Michelin-starred locations in Savoie, Haute-Savoie and Isère to let you experience a never-to-be-forgotten culinary adventure.

Courchevel, the Mecca of Savoyard gastronomy

On our runway to the stars, Courchevel is at the top of the list. The most stylish resort of the 3 Vallées, it is indeed the one with the greatest number of establishments featured in the Michelin Guide.

Aside from the mythical Chabichou, a double-starred white chalet at the crest of the resort, many other great chefs unveil extraordinary cuisines. This year, Sylvestre Wahid - already a two-star chef - wins his new establishment, a private eatery for 8 to 20 people within the Grandes Alpes 1850 hotel, its first star. Orbiting this new star, the best locations endure and offer sophisticated menus at the crest of the resort.

Overview of Michelin-starred restaurants in Courchevel:

• Les Grandes Alpes 1850: Sylvestre Wahid revisits his signature dishes with a tasting menu of about fifteen dishes. It’s a journey across the mountains and the valleys for a simple, wholesome, and sustainable cuisine. There are only 4 tables available in this velvety setting. Consider booking in advance.

• Le Montgomerie: Committed to awakening the senses, the Montgomerie offers a cosy and intimate nook of 15 seats within the K2 Palace. Chef Gatien Demczyna, awarded 2 Michelin stars in 2017, handed over to Pieter Riedijk, a mountain enthusiast, the task of taking over the establishment and channelling wild river trout, Alpine game, Savoy saffron, and local nuts with emotion and propriety.

• 1947 - Le Cheval Blanc: Yannick Alléno, a chef who hails from Île-de-France, earned 5 toques from Gault Millau, and was awarded 3 stars at Alléno Paris in 2014, consolidated his meteoric rise in 2017 at Cheval Blanc, Courchevel. His modern and ambitious French cuisine, the result of numerous experiments, orchestrates a waltz of flavours in a contemporary setting.

Two starred restaurants to discover in Megève

This year, Megève can boast of having won its first female star! In the 2022 Michelin Guide, Anne-Sophie Pic adds a star to the fresh, gourmet cuisine of those who love the Megevan mountain pastures and peaks.

• La Dame de Pic: The famous Anne-Sophie Pic needs no introduction! In the heart of the Four Season in Megève, La Dame de Pic - le 1920 is making gastronomic history thanks to the intervention of this precocious three-starred chef. Revisiting its classics in Savoyard style, the Dame de Pic gives pride of place to greenery with carefully studied dishes. Garden herbs, black garlic, and Alpine wildflowers meet Japanese flavours and coffee aromas for a subtle and refined culinary experience.

• La Table de l'Alpaga: Twice starred in the 2020 Michelin Guide, this high-altitude restaurant serves garden to table. An incredible freshness to be discovered through a 6-stage food and wine tour or, if preferred, through an entirely vegetarian menu made of seasonal produce. Thus, the Haute-Savoie region reveals itself unabashedly, in all its authenticity.

• Flocons de Sel: The food and wine pairings at the Relais & Châteaux hotel alone are worth the trip to Megève, although it is a pleasure to linger. Kristine and Emmanuel Renaut deliver a cuisine that is as subtle as it is inventive, in a rustic setting where plenitude reigns supreme. The view of the vegetable garden is a precious tell-tale sign of the freshness of the ingredients, all of which are selected with the greatest of care for a generous and authentic cuisine.

Gastronomic restaurant in Méribel

Nothing like a stopover in a cosy chalet to discover the art of mountain living! Single Michelin star chef Laurent Azoulay opens his Ekrin to travellers for a fireside dinner. Savoy pork, lake pike, Beaufort cheese from mountain pastures, and Méribel honey merge with numerous culinary creations. Black truffle lovers will enjoy a meal with 6 dashes of truffle, without ever tiring of its subtle and woody aromas.

Gourmet stopover in Val d'Isère

The Olympic resort is filled to the brim with gourmet dineries and quality surf and turf restaurants. Among them, 2 Michelin-starred restaurants stand out, and many Swiss and French visitors make the trip especially for the occasion. We can only recommend that you prepare for a gourmet stopover during your ski holiday to discover these great haunts.

La Table de l'Ours: In this wooden décor typical of the region's cosy chalets, starred chef Antoine Gras draws inspiration from local produce to prepare a cuisine that is as generous as it is refined. It is the ideal starred restaurant to rediscover dishes typical of the Haute-Savoie, such as the smoked diot with cappuccino foam, crozets, Féra fish from Léman, or Tauziet farm poularde.

L'Atelier d'Edmond: At the top of the Espace Tigne-Val d'Isère, l'Atelier d'Edmond immerses its guests in centuries of Savoyard history. Under the auspices of chef Benoît Vidal, skiers discover the culinary heritage of the region, enhanced by intriguing Catalan flavours. Our advice is to access it via Mangard’s blue slope or while strolling through the hamlet of Fornet.

Our gourmet recommendation in Val Thorens

Perched 2,345m high, the Pashmina hotel sets the scene. It is colourful, modern, cosmopolitan; made in the image of its starred restaurant!

Les Explorateurs: Chef Josselin Jeanblanc joins forces with Romuald Fassenet, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France title holder, to create an off-piste menu. It’s a real incentive to travel, which explores the confines of taste and invites fine gourmands on a tasty expedition. One thing is certain: unearthing this extraordinary menu is well worth the climb.

3-star and Bib Gourmand restaurant in Saint Martin de Belleville

St Marcel, a small hamlet near Saint Martin de Belleville is an ideal stopover for those discovering the mountain. Its narrow streets and its stone and wood Alpine chalets have all the makings of a picture-postcard setting. Moreover, this destination brimming with charm and character is home to a family-run establishment:

La Bouitte: Run by René and Maxime Meilleur, a father and son team, the restaurant offers sustainable gastronomy, based on ingredients picked the same day and put together with care. Should the 3-star restaurant be closed on Mondays, you can always retreat to a lively mountain bistro. The "Simple et Meilleur", also run by the Meilleur family, was awarded the Bib Gourmand in 2021 for its tasty menu priced at under 35€.

New entry in the Michelin Guide 2022 for the Panoramic in Tignes

Reach for the sky at the Panoramic! This restaurant has just won its first star in the new 2022 Michelin Guide. It’s a well-deserved reward for an authentic wood-fired cuisine, prepared by a father-son duo at 3,032m altitude.

• Le Panoramic: The highest starred restaurant in the world can be reached thanks to the Perce-Neige funicular. Here, you can enjoy local cuisine on sheepskins scattered here and there on wooden chairs, served by a team donning traditional Savoyard costume. The view of Mont Blanc from the Grande Motte glacier is breath-taking. Be sure to bring sunglasses, as the terrace is always sunlit.

The most beautiful dining spots in Chamonix Mont-Blanc

It would be beyond the realm of possibility to suggest a tour of the summit’s most beautiful dineries and culinary destinations without mentioning Chamonix Mont-Blanc and its must-try alpine cuisine.

• Restaurant Albert 1er: A cuisine that reinvents itself with the changing of the seasons and with new market arrivals. This is the pledge made by head chef Damien Leveau, head sommelier Marc Henri Mialon, and Perrine Carrier, the fifth generation of a type of perfectionism in hospitality which has been passed down from father to daughter. An experience both dizzying and brimming with flavour.

• Le Matafan: Gathering round the beautiful central fireplace in winter and dipping your feet in the grass by a beautiful swimming pool in summer, this dinery proves to be well and truly lively! Head cook Mickey Bourdillat brings forward a fresh and tasty seasonal cuisine. This culinary experience is as spontaneous as it is elegant. It’s a stopover from which you will gladly emerge with a smile to venture out onto the slopes, with new flavours and a taste of the unexpected.

Les Arcs, the bastion of Relais des Moines

An inventive and exacting cuisine, with textures, temperatures, and cooking techniques deliciously mastered to perfection. This is what rewards walkers after a long climb to Les Arcs and its bastion.

The Relais des Moines is a destination worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. The tables are set in a 16th-century bastide with a swimming pool, itself enclosed in a backdrop of lush greenery typical of the Var hinterland.

Sébastien Sanjou, starred chef hailing from Relais des Moines, the son of restaurateurs from the South-West, and friend of the market gardener Philippe Auda, puts it well when he says:

"Cooking is nothing more than sharing.

The simple pleasure of giving happiness to others" Sébastien Sanjou
