Tignes: A Resort With Many Advantages

Located half an hour from the TGV station in Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the department of Savoie, this Haute-Tarentaise resort is one of the superstars of the Alps.  The venue for the freestyle skiing events during the 1992 Winter Olympics, it is one of France's leading ski resorts, attracting a diverse clientele  of mountain sports people. Situated in a spectacular natural mountain amphitheatre overlooked by the famous Grande Motte glacier, Tignes is part of the Tignes-Val d'Isère ski area, offering skiers of all levels a playground with over 300 kilometres of marked runs and 3,200 hectares of off-piste terrain.

Furthermore, the Espace Killy, as it was once called, offers year-round skiing. In the autumn, the area is one of the first to open in Europe, with skiing on the glacier in advance of the opening of the main ski area, including the link to Val d'Isère. The resort attracts high-level skiers who come for pre-season training before the winter competition season. It is also one of the last resorts to close with a season that runs until early May, with the exception of the 20 kilometres of slopes on the Grande Motte glacier, where skiing continues throughout the summer at an altitude of 3,000m.

The neighbouring resort of Val d'Isère has a strong year-round sporting reputation with an exceptional range of activities including downhill skiing, freeride, ski touring, fat biking, ice skating, and ice diving. In the summer, activities on offer include trail running, hiking, bike park, road cycling, horse riding, paragliding, archery, canoeing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. Golfers can enjoy the highest 18-hole course in Europe. Voted the best town for sports lovers in 2008 by L'Équipe newspaper, Tignes is a favourite destination for top-level athletes, such as the French football team, World Cup winners in 1998, who held their final training camp here before the tournament.

Tignes attracts investors looking for a sporting destination that is also lively and family-friendly. The resort has a great après-ski scene, especially in Val Claret, the highest part of the resort, whose lively atmosphere makes it popular with a trendy clientele. The layout of the resort has allowed the various villages making up Tignes to develop their own distinct identities, with some of them especially popular amongst buyers with families attracted by peaceful locations, direct access to the slopes, proximity to restaurants, shops and services, and the wide range of activities on offer.
