The Ski Area of Les Arcs: An Ambitious Collaborative Project

The creation of the resort of Les Arcs was the result of a collaboration between three particularly avant-garde and creative personalities - Robert Blanc, Roger Godino et Charlotte Perriand.

Robert Blanc, the mountain expert

Born in 1933 in Hauteville-Gondon, in the commune of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Robert Blanc's first job was as a shepherd. He later became a ski instructor, mountain guide, rescue worker and trainer.

In 1961, after meeting Roger Gordino, Blanc, along with his four brothers, decided to work together with Gordino to create an innovative winter sports resort on the communal mountain pastures where the brothers had grown up. On 03 October 1961, they signed an agreement with Antoine Bimet, the far-sighted mayor of Hauteville-Gondon, to launch the project.

Roger Godino, the project manager

Originally from Chambéry, Roger Godino was an ambitious entrepreneur with a passion for skiing. In 1964, he founded SMA (Société des Montagnes de l’Arc), becoming the new company's  project manager, contracting authority and general manager. Godino built a multidisciplinary team around himself to turn the new resort into a reality.

From purchasing land to the sale of residential properties and construction of the lift system, he was an important player in the development of the resort and its ski area.

Did you know? Roger Godino was also behind numerous sporting and cultural events in the resort.

Charlotte Perriand, the architectural genius

In 1967, Charlotte Perriand, a talented architect, joined the project to take charge of the creation of an innovative and original design for the the new resort. She ended up working on the project for nearly twenty years and rapidly became a source of inspiration for the entire team of architects. Her greatest strength was in guiding the teams over the years to ensure that the original architectural vision was preserved.

As a result, Les Arcs took on a unique and instantly recognisable style, characterised by functionality, a beautiful, no-frills and utilitarian aesthetic, and architecture that was designed from the inside out.

One Resort, Several Sites With Their Own History

Arc 1600 - Les Arcs' first steps

Arc 1600 opened in 1968, under its original name of "Arc Pierre Blanche". Following the construction of its first hotel, Les Trois Arcs, the resort's capacity had reached 4,000 beds by 1973. This first village effectively acted as the laboratory that inspired the architecture of those that came later.

Inspired by Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand surrounded herself with other modernistic designers such as Pierre Faucheux. The latter designed the dome whose laminated wood framework inspired the logo of Les Arcs in 1969. A true symbol of the resort, this dome remained on all versions of the logo until 1916, when a new logo was created.

The architectural rules that governed the the design of the resort:

  • Respect for the natural site and integration of the buildings into the mountainside and surrounding landscape
  • Preservation of existing mountain chalets
  • Creation of marked walking paths, for a resort without cars
  • Use of local materials
  • Ensuring that habitations did not overlook each other
  • Terraces and balconies with sunny aspects

Arc 1800 - an extension of Arc 1600

In 1974, "Arc Chantel" opened. This village, later renamed to Arc 1800, was an evolution of Arc 1600. Roger Godino wanted to create a resort for both winter and summer. Still adhering to the architectural rules that had governed the creation of the first site, Arc 1800 opened up a vast plateau for skiing in winter and golf in summer. The Hotel du Golf, at that time the largest in the Alps, opened in 1975.

It was in 1974 that the cable car linking Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Arc 1600 opened. It would later be replaced by the Arc en Ciel, an elevated funicular, which opened in 1989 after a three year construction project. The only one of its kind in France, the funicular transported passengers from Bourg-Saint-Maurice railway station up to Les Arcs in just seven minutes.

Arc 2000 - the advent of modernity

The construction of Arc 2000 in 1979 followed a competition between three teams of architects that was won by Bernard Taillefer, originally a cabinet maker, who was tasked with the creation of 5,000 beds around the Butte de Varet. The form of the roofs of the village's buildings was inspired by ski jumps. In1979, the first Club Med in Arc 2000 opened.

In 1982, the cable car up to the highest point in the ski area at the Aiguille Rouge came into service. Its construction, with a single cable span and no intermediate pylons, was a remarkable technical feat on the part of Swiss entrepreneur Habegger. It could carry 1,100 passengers an hour over a distance of 1,068 metres and an elevation gain of 533 metres.

Arc 1950 - a return to tradition - rustic and sophisticated

In 2003, in contrast to the preceding monumental and avant-garde sites, the construction of Arc 1950 took a completely different course. The accommodation here was built according to traditional architecture, using materials from the valley, predominantly wood and slate.

The same year also saw the opening of the Vanoise Express, which remains to this day the largest cable car in the world, connecting Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry to La Plagne with a journey time of just four minutes at a speed of 12.5 metres a second. The Vanoise Express opened up the huge interlinked Paradiski system.

In 2006, the sites of Arc 1600, Arc 1800 and the Aguille Rouge cable car station in Arc 2000 were awarded the "Heritage of the 20th Century" label, intended to promote awareness of the protection and restoration of the architectural heritage of this period.

Les Arcs has a history that will continue to fascinate for years to come. Are you ready to come and experience a resort that has yet to give up all its secrets?

ON THE TRACKS OF THE DUKES OF SAVOY (TDS)

Beautiful, technical, wild, and demanding — there’s no shortage of words to describe the TDS, which links Italy’s Aosta Valley to France’s Savoie, passing through picturesque Mont-Blanc villages and the surrounding mountain ranges. Running this unique course means traversing trails where history and alpine terrain blend with the warm welcome of local communities.

With 145 km and 9,176 meters of elevation gain, this iconic race is a true challenge for every trail runner!

Skiing in Les Arcs

The Ski Area

Come and experience the vast ski area of Les Arcs. There are 107 marked runs over 200 kilometres and the breakdown is as follows: 104 kilometres of blues, 70 kilometres of reds, and 26 kilometres of blacks.

Breakdown of the marked runs in the Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry ski area:

  • 16 blacks
  • 42 reds
  • 55 blues
  • 10 greens

With four slalom courses, eight snow zones, and a high altitude toboggan run at Les Arcs, there are plenty of alternative ways to enjoy the snow.

Since 2010, the resort has had ten "natur" ski runs which are unpisted, but patrolled and secured. For expert skiers only, these are reputed to be the most difficult descents in the ski area.

Did you know? The famous flying kilometre run was created for the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, and saw French Olympic champion Michaël Prüfer break the world speed skiing record, setting a new mark of 229.299 km/h.

The Paradiski Area

Arc 2000 is one of the four areas making up the the resort of Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry. Les Arcs is part of the huge Paradiski area, the second largest interlinked ski area in the world. The Essential Pass gives access to its 425 kilometres of pistes.

In addition to the resort of Les Arcs, the Paradiski area includes:

  • La Plagne
  • Peisey-Vallandry
  • Villaroger
  • Mont-Chavin
  • Les Coches
  • Montalbert
  • Champagny-en-Vanoise

Snow conditions

Les Arcs is situated on the northern slopes of the Vanoise massif. The ski area has a vertical drop of over 2,000 metres from the highest point at an altitude of 3,227 metres. Thanks to its location, Les Arcs has exceptional snow cover.

If necessary, the natural snow cover can be augmented in the early or late season by a network of snow-making machines fed by water from the Adret des Tuffs reservoir, ensuring that at least forty-three kilometres of pistes are open.

The Lift System

We could not talk about the lift system in Les Arcs without mentioning the area's most remarkable installation - the Vanoise Express. This is the world's largest cable car and has been transporting skiers from Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry to La Plagne in just four minutes since its opening in 2003.

Like the Aiguille Rouge (formerly Arc-en-Ciel) cable car, it was built with a single span, without intermediate pylons. In addition, the glass floor of the interior space offers an exceptional experience.

In addition, Arc 2000 has a small reversible cable car, the Cabriolet, which connects it to Arc 1950, as well as one gondola, five chairlifts and three drag lifts.

Did you know? Several of Les Arcs' lifts are open to pedestrians and cyclists during the summer, including the Arcabulle chairlift which is designed to be able to attach bicycles to the seats.

The Unique Architecture of Les Arcs

A forward-thinking and innovative team

From the outset of the 1960s project to create Les Arcs, the resort's architecture was always going to be unique. Charlotte Perriand, a renowned architect, joined the project in 1967, and built a team of the most avant-garde architects and designers including Pierre Faucheux and Bernard Taillefer. Between them, they created unique and outstanding architecture, urban planning and infrastructure.

Ski-in/ski-out accommodation for your next holiday

Les Arcs is an integrated, ski-in/ski-out third generation ski resort where everything is easily accessible without a car. Most of the accommodation in the resort is apartments situated in compact, multi-storey residences sympathetically designed to follow the contours of the terrain.

Did you know? In Arc 2000 most notably, Bernard Taillefer created tall slender structures that resembled ski jumps.

Construction according to precise rules

When designing the resort, the founders followed several architectural rules:

  • Integration of the buildings with the landscape to protect the views and the preservation of existing mountain chalets
  • Use of local materials such as wood, slate and stone
  • The development of a network of signposted footpaths
  • Omnipresent sunny terraces and balconies and dwellings that did not overlook each other

Did you know? To learn more about the unique architecture of Les Arcs, free guided tours are organised regularly throughout the winter season. Departures are from the Arc 1600 and Arc 2000 Tourist Offices
