The ski area

The topography of Courchevel offers its holidaymakers extraordinary views. It is not a valley station but a set of 5 villages spread out on the mountainside. As a result, one overlooks the valley with stunning panoramas!

Courchevel is part of the 3 Valleys, which is the largest connected ski area in the world. The slopes of Courchevel are really superb and offer a variety that one tends to forget. Very technical station with steep and steep corridors like that of the Saulire, and at the same time boulevards, ski slope in pines and very mineral ski slope in high altitude.

Courchevel le Praz (1300)

Easy Access to the Ski Area

Courchevel Le Praz is strategically located, and served by an extensive network of free shuttle buses running at regular and frequent intervals throughout the winter season. The Le Praz gondola provides quick and easy access up to Courchevel 1850, the highest village in the resort, and the endless terrain of the world's largest ski area.

Life in the Village

Courchevel Le Praz has an especially lively après-ski scene, with the snow front busy with people extending the pleasures of the day's skiing. The village also has a number of very good restaurants serving Savoyard specialities.

Did you know ? Built for the 1992 Winter Olympics, the famous Le Praz ski jump is the only one of its kind in France, and is still in use today.

Courchevel la Tania (1400)

In the Heart of the Forest

Situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres, La Tania is midway between Courchevel and Méribel. Surrounded by pine forests, the village has an enchanting atmosphere, and is perfect for a relaxing holiday in the heart of nature.

Despite being part of a huge ski area, La Tania has remained on a human scale, and offers a striking contrast to the other larger and busier resorts in the 3 Valleys.

Did you know ? The western part of the forest is classified as a natural area of ecological interest for its variety of fauna and flora.

An Attractive Neighbourhood

Courchevel La Tania is a quiet, peaceful village with a pedestrianised centre. This friendly and safe resort is particularly well-suited to family holidays in the mountains.

La Tania's buildings were designed by Jacques Labro, one of the architects who designed the striking resort of Avoriaz, recognised for his innovation and vision. La Tania was originally built in 1990 to house the international media personnel covering the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.

Did you know ? For food lovers, La Tania has a Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Farçon. Chef, Julien Machet serves beautifully presented dishes using the best locally-sourced produce. A great way to enjoy a fine dining experience during your ski holiday.

Access to the Slopes

When staying in La Tania you will have ski-in/ski-out access to the pistes of Courchevel and the entire 3 Valleys ski area. La Tania's snow front is easily accessible for beginners.

Courchevel Village (1550)

The position

Courchevel Village (1550) is the resort of choice for sportsmen. It spreads down the slopes of the Provères, the Tovets and the Dou du Midi offering ski accommodation on foot or almost.

The views are all exceptional since Courchevel Village (1550) as the chalets and apartments often overlook openings with views of the slopes and east, overlooking the valley with clear landscapes on the peaks of the Vanoise.

An often forgotten asset of Courchevel Village (1550) is its immediate vicinity with the Croisette, the center of Courchevel (1850) which is joined with the gondola lift of the Grangettes.

Activities

The snow front, facing south, and the Savoyard restaurants such as L'œil de Bœuf or Le Caveau, or La Casa Italia and La Cortona, offer a familiar and convivial atmosphere at this altitude of Courchevel.

Finally, the incredible Aquamotion aquasportive center with its swimming pools, surfing pool with artificial waves, canyoning equipment, spas and other restaurants in Courchevel Village (1550) is a major asset that attracts all levels of the station for 365 days a year. The Aquamotion is located in the Grande Combe, equidistant between Courchevel Village (1550) and Moriond (1650), which is accessed by a pleasant footpath and escalators.

The accommodation of Courchevel Village (1550) offers both small apartments on slopes and large chalets of prestige, some even including a swimming pool. The residence Carré Blanc (video) and its 30 high-end apartments in the center or the prestigious chalets in the residential area of Les Brigues such as Le Partagas, Le 1550 and Ancolie are the witnesses of a high-end property that is no longer confined to Courchevel 1850) but which offers lower prices.

A bit of history

At the origin of the ski resort, Saint-Bon-en-Tarentaise

Saint-Bon-en-Tarentaise or Saint-Bon-Courchevel is located at 1100 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Vanoise massif (Croix du Verdon, Croix de la Saulire, Aiguille du Fruit) and in the Tarentaise valley with a stunning view towards the summits. The economy of the village is based on cattle breeding and dairy cow farming until the beginning of the 20th century and already Alpine pastures are used in summer to benefit from the quality of the grass.

If the settlement of the houses does not exceed the altitude of 1300 meters, the barns, cellars and Alpine chalets dot the slopes of the Vanoise up to 1600 meters. Saint-Bon lives from the cattle breeding, dairy cow farming and also from the Tarentaise industry, which develops at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also at this moment that tourism is making its appearance on the commune, with the opening of the first hotel, Le Lac Bleu, which benefits from the clientele of Brides-les-Bains located a few meters below.

First ski lift, ski jump and bobsleigh .

Winter activities are slowly taking off in Saint-Bon as elsewhere: skiing, ski jumping, bobsleighing, sledding, ice skating. There was no specific equipment to practice these activities. Instead, with winter and the presence of snow, roads were used for tobogganing and bobsleigh, a tennis court for ice skating, only the ski jump required a springboard in the Le Praz. But the rise of winter tourism in the Alpine mountains had begun.

It was not until 1945 that the first ski lift was built in Moriond. In 1946, the General Council made a major decision: to set up, starting from scratch, a ski resort on the place called Les Tovets, which overlooks Saint-Bon. This was a first since, until then, the ski resorts have all been created from an existing village. In this regards, Courchevel will serve as a reference in the development of the winter sports industry.

Road, electricity and telephone, water supply, it is finally at the end of 1947 that the first hotel of the future Courchevel comes out of ground. The first two ski lifts are built by a company that will also become a reference in its field: Pomagalski.

Since 1950, an authentic style for accommodations

In 1953, Laurent Chappis, one of the architects of the resort, brings up a mazot (barn) in Courchevel to use as a dwelling. Soon after, the mazot influenced the development of an entire subdivision of chalets inspired by the mazot. It is also the birth of a form of accommodation that makes the mark of Courchevel: chalets in the traditional style appreciated by the vacationers of the whole world.

Even today, the mazot is an inspiration for the construction of chalets in Courchevel and in many Savoyard resorts. Since its inception, the resort of Courchevel has generally favored an architecture reminiscent of the traditional chalets, as well for apartment residences as individual dwellings. A succesful approach that has allowed the resort to stand out and propose today its unique cachet and an atmosphere that is not found in the architectures of large ensembles that can be found in some major Alpine resorts.

A ski resort is born !

As a result of the work undertaken during the decade, Courchevel already has all the ski resorts that can be found today: in 1959 the resort is equipped with a cable car, 6 drag lifts and 3 cable cars. On the accommodation side, there are no fewer than 210 buildings with a total capacity of nearly 3 000 beds for about fifty businesses. Courchevel is already set for greatness. The development work will continue to achieve what is the resort today, a leading ski area integrated into the largest connected area of the world: the 3 Valleys.

The ski resort today

Today Courchevel has no fewer than 5 accommodation sites, of which 4 are integrated into the ski area.

The original village of Saint-Bon remains a part of the resort and offers holidaymakers accommodation at 1100 meters above sea level in an authentic village setting. It does not have ski lifts connected to the domain but offers regular shuttles. A ski slope allows a return by ski to Saint-Bon.

Just above is Courchevel Le Praz at 1300 meters above sea level. Like Saint-Bon, Le Praz is a historic village, inhabited year long before the ski industry developped. Ideal for families who want a traditional setting, surrounded by forest while being at the foot of the slopes. Holidaymakers will find many rental options of chalets and apartments in residence.

Avec Courchevel 1550, aujourd’hui Courchevel Village, l’altitude commence à se faire sentir : une partie de la station se situe directement dans la pente, l’architecture alterne entre résidences d’appartements et chalets collectifs ou individuels.

Très proche de Courchevel Village, Courchevel 1650, désormais Courchevel Moriond est réputée pour son exposition qui lui vaut son surnom : "l’ensoleillée". Courchevel Moriond s’étend jusqu’à 1800 mètres d’altitude à La Daille et propose un accès privilégié au domaine skiable.

Enfin Courchevel 1850, aujourd’hui Courchevel, est un peu le vaisseau amiral. C’est ici que Courchevel a construit sa réputation de station du showbiz et des élites fortunées. C’est ainsi que Courchevel (1850) compte 4 palaces et de nombreux hôtels 4 et 5 étoiles. Courchevel, c’est aussi une offre abondante de chalets de luxe, chalets de prestige de capacités variables, pouvant satisfaire les demandes les plus exigeantes.

Courchevel, arrival city of the 2023 Tour de France

On Thursday, July 24th, the world’s ski capital trades its snowy peaks for the legendary switchbacks of the Col de la Loze, as it hosts the finish of Stage 18 of the 112th Tour de France. For the first time, the ascent will be tackled from the Courchevel side, adding a new challenge to this already daunting stage.

Millet X Trail

More than just a sporting challenge, the Millet XTrail Courchevel — scheduled for July 27th, 2025 — is an invitation to push your limits in the heart of the breathtaking landscapes of the Vanoise National Park. Designed to gently guide every trail runner on their journey toward Ultra Trail distances, it offers a unique and flexible approach. With six course options — 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, and 66 km — each participant can adjust their challenge in real time, based on how they feel and what they aspire to, always pushing further and beyond their own limits.

Ski Jumping World Cup

August 9th & 10th 2025

Since 1991, Courchevel’s Olympic ski jumps have hosted the only French stage of the Ski Jumping World Cup. More than just a competition, it’s a must-see event where the world’s elite take on the jumps before an enthusiastic crowd.

The Cycling Event

From August 15 to 17, 2025, Courchevel will host a new edition of the Cycling Event Courchevel — a must-attend gathering for mountain biking enthusiasts. Three action-packed days of elite competitions, exclusive test rides, and cutting-edge tech showcases will define the event, offering a full immersion into the world of off-road cycling.

The ski area of Courchevel spreads over 150 kilometers of ski slopes with 55 ski lifts. The area offers many ski slopes for all levels with 18 green slopes, 40 blue slopes, 32 red slopes and 12 black slopes.

Courchevel also offers several "themed" skiing areas on its domain. Beginners, families and anyone looking for a quiet ski area will particularly appreciate the Zen and Easy Rider areas in Le Praz, the Altiport, the Jardin Alpin and Moriond. Specific ski passes to access these beginner areas are available. In 2020, Les 3 Vallees are partnering up with the latest animated Disney film, "Frozen 2". Visitors will have the chance to take part in a real-life skiing treasure hunt, following in Elsa and Anna’s tracks on a one-of-a-kind route.

The Western Skipark offers a cowboy and Indian atmosphere to the families, a protected play area (enclosed area) for gentle and wide slopes. There are also two canyons: the Indian's Trail and the Fun Park.

The resort has also partnered up with the Aqua Center Aquamotion. With the "3 Vallees Wellness" ski pass, you ski 7 days on the exceptionnal 3 Vallees ski area and relax one time in the Aquamotion center in Courchevel.

The Stop Zone offers a timed slope and challenges skiers to a quick and controlled stop at the end of the descent .

The Family Park is an easy boarder cross with whoops and banked turns to hone your skills in complete safety.

The BMW XDrive Cup offers a timed and filmed slalom, each skier can then retrieve the video of his exploits!

Finally, the DVA Park is an educational space that allows you to learn how to find avalanche victims.

The 3 Valleys Ski Area

The 3 Vallées is the largest connected ski area in the world, it includes the resorts of Courchevel, Val Thorens, Méribel, Les Menuires, La Tania, Brides-les-Bains, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Orelle.

The figures speak for themselves with a total of 600 km of skiing on 328 alpine ski slopes, 154 ski lifts, 105 sq.km of surface area and 62,000 meters of cumulative gradient . What to please skiers of all levels!

With 4 Funitels (two-cable disconnectable gondola, capable of operating at high speed even in windy conditions), 3 cable cars, 33 gondolas and 61 high-speed chairlifts the 3 Valleys ski area claims that the time spent in their ski lifts is divided by two compared to competing ski resorts.

The snow

85% of the ski area of Courchevel is located above 1800 meters and the majority of the slopes are oriented north, which guarantees a qualitative natural snow. The area also has 4 glaciers and 25 accessible summits, for a maximum altitude of 3230 meters.

With 2494 snowmakers covering 50% of the ski area, the 3 Vallees guarantee snow on the ski slopes maintained every night by 73 grooming machines.

The Trois Vallées ski area

To ski at La Tania, the most experienced skiers can head for the downhill ski area, which borrows several hundred square kilometres from the 3 Vallées ski area. On the programme: over 600 km of skiing, divided into 330 pistes, green, blue, red and black.

The 3 Vallées ski area has no fewer than 166 ski lifts. You can take the Bouc Blanc chairlift to Courchevel, or the Dou des Lanches chairlift to Méribel.
